A story as sweet as MOM in Midtown, New York
Parents love their children unconditionally. This story is special because it is reverse. A daughter reached out to me to design and renovate her mother’s apartment, she wanted the best for her mother. Their bond and relationship is truly special and that’s what makes this apartment special. How many daughters get the honor to give back to their parents. As I got to know the clients, this mother-daughter opened their homes, their hearts, their funny bone and mom’s kitchen to the team that built this home. Designwise, storage and kitchen were the focus areas in this home. Photography by Daniel Wang.
Fully custom kitchen where we moved the fridge to the coat closet in the outside hallway, to create more counter space for the lady of the house who loves to cook for the family. We chose a beautiful countertop and continued it as backsplash. Custom cabinet design with a square trim carries through the house. Polished Chrome oval hardware makes the custom finish on the faucet exciting!! Brand new engineered floors add warmth to an otherwise cooler palette.
The other side of this galley kitchen… Wolf range and microwave drawer and Bertazzoni hood hidden in the cabinets… the cabinet design includes under cabinet strip lighting. The counter space we created in this kitchen amazes me. Moving the fridge out was the most important decision and made a huge impact.
That’s the new panelled sub-zero fridge that as moved out of the kitchen, but is at the kitchen start. We extended the kitchen outwards and added more storage for the lady of the house. Adding the eased curve to the kitchen doorway adds softness with all the rectangular cabinet design.
This primary bedroom is fitted with a custom bed, custom nightstands and a sitting area by the windows for tea and chit chats. The details are soft and luxe and the mood is calming and soft.
Primary bathroom shown here. We started with a feature mosaic tile for the feature wall and paired it with Thassos field tile on rest of the walls. The floors are a blue celeste natural stone and the custom sink made out of a blue celeste slab is the stunner. Plumbing fixture from Rohl in polished nickel add some glam.
Another view of the custom floating sink flanked under a robern medicine cabinet and sconces. The custom storage with mirrored fronts is another moment in design time. We created drawers with mirrored fronts to add some drama. The mirror makes the bathroom feel larger and gives it a break from the all the stone. Functionally the drawers lend much needed storage in this minimal bathroom.
A view of the bench in the shower. We created a floating bench to continue the contemporary design. For those lazy days when you sit in the shower and let yourself spa. Plenty of room to get comfortable here.
A look here at the architectural details. The detail on the interior doors and the custom cabinets, the light toned wide plank engineered hardwood and the door trim and baseboard... The door levers and the hardware on the extended kitchen cabinets. This might be one of my favourite design moments from this home.
The second bedroom has custom radiator cabinets with some additional storage. The wallpaper has some gray tones in it to pick on the blue fabric from the headboard. THe wood trim details continues from the kitchen cabinets to the radiator cabinets with waterworks hardware in polished chrome.
This bathroom is made of Calcite Azul Quartzite slabs, floor to ceiling, the floor itself and custom sink. Executed to perfection and makes a typical 5x8 bathroom feel large!! We used the same calcite Azul slab to create a custom sink for the second bath. Installed and executed to perfection under the arched medicine cabinet and a minimal set of lavatory faucet.
Full slab bathroom in this stunning calcite azul slab. There is vision and then there is execution which was nail biting till the very end. It all worked as the niche with its mitered corners and the infinity drain give this typical bathroom a larger feeling.
