Contemporary Design in Downtown, New York

Round 2 because its the same house and same client but a new vision all together. My clients are a young family and they decided to buy the adjoining unit and combine it with their current apartment. Both the kids got their own rooms and what was the nursery previously became the flex room aka mom’s office, guest room and playroom. The apartment is an open concept layout with a modern contemporary design. With little kids running around, we splurged on the lighting and got furniture that had performance fabrics and was kid-friendly. I worked closely with the architect and it made the experience all the more enjoyable. Architect on project is Adam Alter and Photography by Daniel Wang.

This wallpaper creates a major focal point for the whole house as you walk from one part of the apartment to the other. The softness of the falling petals and the deep colors of wine and burgundy on an irredescant base create a moment to stop and take notice. The pendant light against this background and its silohuette with the materiality of leather and frosted glass adds to the drama. The alabaster sconces outside complement the room and its significance. This room used to be the nursery and is now the ultimate flex room. The sofa is a pullout sofa in a nuetral colorway adn performance fabric and the rug is play rug for the kids to spead out; totally wipeable, but with an air of sophistication. Flexibility in layout is a huge deal and only in Manhattan, where square footage is precious, do you get a chance to create these multipurpose rooms surrounded by a long list of things to check and achieve.

The room has very cool fluted glass pocket doors creating the privacy needed during work calls and when the room is being used as a guest room. The fluted glass doors add to the genius of the design here.

The chair doubles as a work chair or additional seating based on what purpose it needs to serve. Notice how the arms fit under the desk… such details are what I live for.

The living room is flanked with beautiful art and a large walnut coffee table, the clients already had. I moved the papa bear chair from their primary bedroom (which I previously designed) to the corner and it looks great here. The clients love red and I added a bench in rust colorway to fill the corner and provide additional seating. The accent chairs are handsome and stately sitting atop a neutral rug that grounds the space. My favourite piece is the chandelier above and how it adds softness and feminity to the space.

The residential hallway beyond has textured faux cowhide wallpaper in vynil to protect from kiddi hands. A peak in is one of my favourite moments here. It feels layered and invites you in to take a walk into the hallway. A textured console table and mirror above reflects the commissioned art on the opposite wall and the fun bar stools in the kitchen.

This is the dad’s office… a tighter nook than the mom’s office but with beautiful wallpaper to create a burst of pattern in a serene primary bedroom.
